Client Brief | Recommend and Share Interview

The brief: Film and edit an interview video for a client. The video needs to effectively tell the story behind the managing director and his drive for creating his business. The video must have an emotional and inspiring sentiment whilst also remaining short and concise.

1 | Upon being briefed about the task and scheduling a time and date for the client to come in, I began my preliminary research into interview techniques, as this was the first interview project I had done, utilising online resources from articles to video tutorials. I'm a firm believer in being accountable for my own progression and throughout the apprenticeship, I have utilised many online resources to learn new skills and develop existing ones. Some other courses I have enrolled on include, Adobe Premiere pro training and Instagram organic growth training.

Camera Lenses | One important aspect I wanted to achieve was to get a good level of background separation from the subject, so I opted to use two of my lenses, the Sigma 30mm f.14 and the 16mm f1.4. Both lenses also allow for better low light performance thanks to the low aperture.

Thorough Preparation is Key | Preparation is essential, especially when it comes to projects that require filming. In preparation for this project a few days prior to filming, I scouted an appropriate area in the office building to conduct the interview. On the day of filming, I set up the cameras, tripods and microphones, ensuring everything was fully charged including spare batteries. I also conducted multiple camera and audio microphone tests, exporting the files over to my laptop and reviewing the test footage and audio to make sure there were no problems and this ensured a smooth workflow for the client.

2 | The client had already prepared a script for the interview, so my role was essentially focused on making sure I captured the necessary footage for the video including b-roll of the client in an urban environment, to be used in the editing process to visually support the interview and add depth to the message. I also sourced some stock footage to make up for the b-roll footage I could not capture due time and resource restraints, making sure the stock footage were sourced with a valid commercial license.

3 | Before starting the post production process, I made it a priority to back up the footage on a cloud storage server. This is an essential part of the video editing process, something I have covered on the videography page, but it's one that can be easily overlooked. I then structured my project files appropriately, placing any assets in their respective locations ready to begin the editing process.

My editing process | What I love about the creative industry is that there are different work processes and methods of working and from that, people are able to develop and refine their own styles. My process. when it comes to editing videos, depends on the intended outcome of the brief. With this particular brief the main focus was to deliver a story driven narrative, therefore I started the process by cutting up the footage and adding music afterwards, appropriate to the tone and emotions I wanted to convey. However, with some projects I choose to lay the music down first, listening to the chosen track(s) repeatedly to get a full grasp of the flow, tempo and the emotions. I tend to use this process more for visually predominant /cinematic projects such as this personal project I worked.

3 | During the editing process, I provided regular updates to the client through exported drafts, to accomodate for any changes and ensure I was meeting the clients expectations. A few revisions later, I was able to meet the clients deadline and expectations, with the video now featured on the homepage of the recommended tradespeople website.

Summary | Having a clear understanding of a brief is essential to ensuring a smooth workflow process. Having a good level of open communication is the contributing factor in all of this, hence why I made sure the client was kept updated on the progress of the video. This resulted in the expectations of both sides being met, but more importantly the client was happy and satisfied with the outcome.
